Ford Mexico - Rally Spec

The Mexico came to us in February 2015 for the body work and to be returned to its original colour Sebring Red. The Mexico has seen a lot of action over the years, as you can see from the rally list below.

The car went on a road test and evaluate before stripping down. Found - suspected the gear box mount had excess play.  Oil pressure low ,  temperature  and fuel gauges did not work.  Engine second choke seemed flat.  Timing 20' @ idle 30' maximum advance.  Plug leads loose.  Breather cap falls apart and leaks into   water overflow bottle.  Compressions 145, 145, 110 and 115, suspeced bad gasket between 3rd and 4th cylinders.  Gearbox mount has excess play.  No oil cooler.  Electric fan poor (old Kenlowe).

Following the check over the car was steam clean to remove all dirt before stripping down.  Engine and gearbox removed, complete drive train was removed and assessed. All external and internal parts and fittings, roll cage, wiring switches and all glass.  All parts and fittings were catalogued and condition noted and photographed.  Steam cleaning axles, suspension, engine etc. before stripping down into parts requiring blasting. Body shell and parts (blank of parts) were media blasted and on return, excess media removed and assessed, the parts were repaired as required then sorted ready for either powder coating or painting. On inspection of the body shell is was quite evident that there was a lot of work required to bring this Mexico backup to spec. A long list of panels and repairs was drawn up.

Work on the body shell began with the  front panel and inner panels,  full floor, inner an outer sills, front wings and full quarters to name a few of the Magnum panels that were fitted and made to align with the existing body work.

Further information and pictures on this project to follow.

History of the Mk1 Escort Mexico

Purchased by the customer on the 21/10/2001, having 12 previous keepers.

Car was bought to compete in road rallies and used competitively 2002 to 2014. In 2014 decided that 12 years of rallying had taken its toll as well as rust etc. February 2015 sent to Chris Martin (Classic and Retro at Sible Hedingham, Essex) for body work. Car was re-painted white (very badly) in 1986, now being returned to original colour Sebring red. The pictures below are of the customer and his car as it used to be and some rally action shots and damage.

Below is some of the rally race information for the Mexico
